The background of World Letter Writing Day

Richard Simpkin, an Australian author, artist, and photographer who adores writing handwritten letters, established the day. It all began when he began writing to individuals he considered to be Australian Legends and received responses from them! His experience composing letters to legends enabled him to publish the book “Australian Legends” in 2005. In the book, he paid tribute to the art of letter writing and reflected on how it altered his life. In 2014, he created World Letter Writing Day to further honour handwritten correspondence. To promote the art, he also conducts letter-writing seminars in schools.

The practise of letter writing has existed for centuries and was prevalent in ancient Egypt and Greece. At that time, however, letters were inscribed on metal, lead, wax-coated wooden tablets, fragments of pottery, animal skin, and papyrus. In the 17th and 18th centuries, letters were primarily used to convey information, specific news, information, and greetings. Others used letters to communicate ideas and develop critical thinking about specific topics. For this reason, numerous historical letters serve as an archive of personal and diplomatic interactions for historians. They are even used to ascertain how many historical events transpired.

From then on, letters distinguished themselves as an art form and literary genre. When postal services were created and people began using letters for personal communication, significant changes occurred. During wartime, letters were the only means of communication between families and partners.
