The reality series Gold Rush served as his introduction to a wider audience as he sought for gold in Alaska. He appeared in the program’s first four seasons.

Hurt and his son Dustin each received their own spinoff in the 2018–2019 television series Gold Rush: White Water. They were part of a crew that battled the elements and nature while searching for gold at the base of Alaskan waterfalls in whitewater collection pools.
