GOP Heavyweights Descend on Anaheim: Inside the Republican Convention

The party's positions on abortion and homosexual marriage appear to be contested issues.

GOP Heavyweights Descend on Anaheim: The California Republican Party Fall Convention will focus primarily on the Republican presidential candidates, including former President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to speak on Friday and is one of four candidates scheduled to attend the weekend event.

However, a potential conflict is brewing behind the scenes over the party platform.

John Moorlach, a former Orange County supervisor and state senator, is a member of the platform composing committee, and he stated that there has been considerable back and forth over the past few months.

During a meeting, he stated, “We were given over 100 pages of amendments.”

When someone proclaimed a break at 2, Moorlach raised his hand and inquired, “Is that 2 a.m. or 2 p.m.?” Because this will take the entire night.”

Then, “all of a sudden they come in with a one-pager,” Moorlach stated. “Then, all of a sudden, it was 5 o’clock and they told us to vacate the hotel room. The committee ultimately produced this (draft) document, which is now four pages as opposed to 31. Perhaps this is the solution, to keep things simple.”

Currently, however, some party members are stating, “We don’t like that, so let’s stick with the old one.”

The party’s positions on abortion and homosexual marriage appear to be contested issues.

Under “right to life,” the draft states, “We value the protection of innocent life and seek to reduce abortions.” We support adoption as an alternative to abortion and urge legislators to reduce the administrative burden imposed on adoptive parents.”

In contrast, the current platform defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, whereas the proposed section titled “Family” avoids this issue.

The draft states, “We affirm that a nurturing, secure home for all children should be our society’s highest priority. Both traditional marriages and families are significantly strengthened by religious institutions. Families should be safeguarded and given the authority to make decisions consistent with their values, beliefs, and faith.”

Fred Whitaker, chairman of the Orange County Republican Party, stated that he is pressing for the party to adopt the current platform so that the focus can remain on the presidential candidates.

Whitaker stated, “We shouldn’t have platform battles in the middle of a presidential election.”

Whitaker stated that numerous party members have signed a letter stating, “We should re-adopt our platform and maintain party unity.” “I am sanguine that the platform committee will ultimately abandon the draft and re-adopt the platform with no floor battles on Sunday.

“If they release a flawed platform on Saturday, Sunday will be chaotic, which will be detrimental to the party. If we do our job correctly, it will all be done behind the scenes, and there will be little for reporters to write about.”

The majority of the remaining enthusiasm will occur on Friday, when Trump is scheduled to speak at a banquet luncheon.

Trump is the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination despite facing four criminal indictments. A civil fraud trial against the former president and his company is scheduled to commence in New York on Monday after an appeals panel lifted a temporary restraining order.

Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, stated that she intends to summon Trump and his three adult children as witnesses at the Manhattan Supreme Court trial.

Tuesday, trial court judge Arthur Engoron found Trump, his two adult sons Donald Jr. and Eric, the Trump Organization, and other defendants liable for manipulating the values of properties and other assets fraudulently.

Sen. Tim Scott, who is also pursuing the Republican presidential nomination, will hold a “fireside chat” with California Republican Party Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson at 3 p.m., according to Matt Gorman, the senior communications director for the Scott campaign.

At 7:30 p.m., Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is scheduled to speak at a dinner banquet.

Saturday at noon, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy is scheduled to speak at a luncheon banquet.

Whitaker stated, “I anticipate a very exciting convention.” Obviously, the four presidential candidates will be present, so the attendance will skyrocket.

Jon McClintock, sergeant of the Anaheim Police Department, stated that city officials are prepared for the anticipated extra traffic and activism.

McClintock stated, “We handle large-scale events virtually every week and have a great deal of experience doing so.” “We are well-prepared and prepared to proceed. Our mission is to provide a secure environment for the attendees, and for anyone exercising their First Amendment rights, we also provide a safe environment.

We are collaborating with our state and federal partners and will dedicate a significant number of personnel to the event.
