At the age of 66, Bartlett passed away peacefully while sleeping at home on December 10, 2013. His cause of death was heart failure, as Diana discloses in her book “Find a Way.” The only real sadness since the swim has been the passing of our genius, John Bartlett.

She said in a similar tone, “Three months later, John went away from heart failure at the young age of sixty-six. In Alva, he and his spouse Elke Thuerling settled. They commemorated their 21-year marriage.

“The thought of him being gone is so painful and aching that words just cannot express how heavy my heart feels.” After Bartlett’s death, Thuerling wrote on Facebook, “I treasure the memories of our many adventures and all the special friends we have made over the years.” She went on, “I am so appreciative of the love that is pouring into me.” Bartlett dedicated his final days to constructing a trimaran. “John’s and my dear friends wanted to help him realise his dream of designing and constructing a Trimaran, which he had recently created. He was nearly done. His wife wrote in the same article, “I am deeply touched by everyone who has shared the wish to see the completion of the boat we affectionately named ‘Catnahaf.'”

It becomes clear from reading his obituary that Bartlett was a multifaceted man. Based on the detailed biography, he was an accomplished painter, carpenter, and meditator. He played flute and guitar with the band Electric Cowboy and also doubled on bass.

In addition to charting the oceans, the 66-year-old sailor designed boats, including “a unique 70′ power outrigger as a Mothership for sea kayaking.” His knowledge of ocean currents is demonstrated in a New York Times piece that details how Diana Nyad’s quick swimming was made possible by his acquaintance with them.
