From 2002 to 2007, Clément Joly, the accountant father of Joly, served as superintendent of the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority. He also served as the chair of the finance committee for the Quebec Liberal Party. Her stepmother, Carole-Marie Allard, is a lawyer and journalist who served as the Laval—East Member of Parliament from 2000 to 2004.
Melanie Joly is a member of the Liberal Party and represents the Montreal-area constituency of Ahuntsic-Cartierville in the House of Commons. She was elected as a member of parliament in the 2015 federal election. She has held multiple portfolios, including La Francophonie, Tourism, and Canadian Heritage.
