Questlove’s Weight Loss Journey: The Secret Behind His Transformation

Questlove's 40s were a pivotal decade because that's when he realized he needed to take action to improve his health.

Questlove’s Weight Loss Journey: American musician, record producer, DJ, music industry journalist, actor, and filmmaker Ahmir Khalib Thompson is better known by his stage name, Questlove. He is best known as the drummer and co-frontman (together with Black Thought) of the hip-hop group The Roots, who have been the house band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon since 2014. They were the regular house band on Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night show.

He has produced music for a wide variety of artists, including Elvis Costello, Common, D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Jay-Z, Nikka Costa, and, more recently, Booker T. Jones, Al Green, Amy Winehouse, and John Legend.

In addition to those groups, he’s on the production staffs for Soultronics, Grand Negaz, Randy Watson Experience, Soulquarians, and Grand Wizzards. Among the many awards he’s won are the Academy Award, the six Grammys, and the British Academy Film Award.

Although he has made significant contributions to the musical world, his contributions are not the focus of the current conversation. Now that he’s eating less, he’s slimmed down. People see that he has shrunk considerably since he was in his forties, and they are both impressed and curious about his new lifestyle. How did Questlove manage to lose so much weight?

Questlove’s Weight Loss Journey

Questlove’s 40s were a pivotal decade because that’s when he realized he needed to take action to improve his health. His friends’ deaths from strokes at a young age served as a wake-up call. He hit 488 pounds at his heaviest and knew he needed to make some changes.

The truth is that Questlove’s way of life was everything but wholesome; he embraced a partying lifestyle while paying no mind to his food or general health. The sudden deaths of his friends from strokes, however, rocked him to his core and convinced him that he had to do something.

Transforming His Diet

Questlove knew that if he wanted to lose weight, he needed to make a radical change to his diet. He stopped eating foods containing gluten, wheat, and most forms of dairy. He ate mostly plant-based foods, such as seitan, soy, tofu, and a wide variety of vegetables. He started basing his diet around juices, particularly those made from beets and ginger.

Questlove eventually became a vegan as part of his efforts to live a healthy lifestyle. All meat, eggs, and dairy were removed from his diet. He also restricts his calorie intake, limiting himself to two glasses of red wine per night while avoiding white carbs, fruit, and caloric drinks. No single food group dominates his diet, but he does allow himself one day a week to splurge.

Including Not Only Yoga but More

Questlove’s commitment to his weight loss goal goes beyond the foods he eats. He began incorporating yoga into his daily life and has been doing it regularly ever since. He has adopted a more holistic strategy toward his health, one that includes not only exercise but also rest and good sleep.

Questlove is committed to continuing with his new healthy habits, such as his nutrition, yoga, and meditation routines. He’s currently at 300 pounds and wants to lose another 100 to improve his health and outlook on life.

Questlove’s life is an inspiration for everyone who wants to lose a large amount of weight and improve their health and longevity through the power of self-awareness and determination.
