Monday marked the passing of Tammy Stewart, the senior judge on the Orleans Parish Juvenile Court bench, according to court officials and her family. The individual is 53 years old.

Following a brief illness, the judge passed away at 2:30 a.m. on Monday at a hospital, according to Dianne Stewart, the judge’s mother. She mentioned that Stewart is survived by a son aged 11 but declined to elucidate.

In 2009, Democratic candidate Stewart earned the Section B seat. In 2020, she ran unopposed for her most recent six-year term. The mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, issued a statement in which she said, “The city has lost a dedicated public servant who was committed to fairness and the principles of justice.”

As a judge, Stewart, according to Aaron Clark-Rizzio, co-executive director of the Louisiana Centre for Children’s Rights, which represents adolescents in juvenile court, won over attorneys from all political parties.

He added that she was “an incredibly fair judge who genuinely cared about the children who appeared before her.” She treated all solicitors with respect, including defence solicitors, even when we disagreed.

Before being appointed a judge, Stewart practised law both privately and for the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office.

Prior to her election, she had also served as a temporary juvenile court justice in accordance with the Louisiana Supreme Court’s appointments. Stewart graduated from Southern University in New Orleans with a bachelor’s degree before enrolling at Ohio State University to study law.

“The Honourable Judge Stewart was a beloved family member, a respected judge, and a genuine defender of justice. It was an honour to know and work with her; her life’s work made New Orleans a better place,” District Attorney Jason Williams said in a statement.
