What Food can you buy from CalFresh Cards?

Besides monthly cash, many families also get food help from the CalFresh program. This benefit comes through an EBT card, which is kind of like a debit card for food. People can use the card to buy food at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other places that accept EBT.

They can buy things like milk, cereal, vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, and even seeds to grow their own food. But they can’t use it to buy hot meals, alcohol, tobacco, or anything that’s not food. Also, they’re not allowed to buy things to eat inside the store.

The money on the EBT card doesn’t come on the same day for everyone. It depends on the last number of the case number each family has. So if the number ends with “6,” then the food money comes on the 6th day of the month.

If the card is lost or someone steals it, the person should call (877) 328-9677 right away. That way, they can freeze the card and protect their money from being used by someone else.

How to Apply?

People can apply for CalWORKs in a few ways. They can go to the social services office in their county, or apply by phone, mail, or fax. Some counties even let you apply online using BenefitsCal.com. If someone wants to check the status of their application or has a question, it’s best to contact the local agency in their own county.

Families depending on CalWORKs can expect their June payments to land sometime between June 1st and June 3rd, just like usual.
