Can You Get Both VA Disability and Social Security Disability? Here’s What to Know

Veterans need stable income and healthcare access post-service. VA disability and SSDI benefits vary based on health issues and work history, respectively.

VA Disability and Social Security Disability: For veterans experiencing health issues after their service, having a stable income and access to healthcare is crucial. Understanding the benefits available from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) can be complex, especially for veterans who may be eligible for both VA disability and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

Each agency has its own criteria: VA disability benefits are based on health issues related to military service and are assigned a rating that determines monthly compensation. In contrast, SSDI benefits are based on a person’s work history and require that the disability significantly limits the ability to work.

Importantly, veterans can potentially receive both benefits simultaneously, as VA disability payments don’t impact SSDI eligibility. However, the application processes are separate, and it can be helpful for veterans to seek support from veteran service organizations to better understand and navigate these resources.

VA Disability and Social Security Disability: Can you get both?

If you fulfill the qualifications for both programs, you can receive Social Security Disability benefits in addition to VA disability benefits.

Veterans can occasionally be eligible for both, improving their access to healthcare and financial security even if they have opposite aimed. Veterans who have service-connected disabilities that were brought on by or made worse by active military service are eligible for VA disability benefits.

Regardless of the veteran’s present capacity for employment, this award is only dependent on conditions relating to their service. However, the definition of disability used by Social Security is quite stringent.

You must be unable to work due to a serious medical condition that is projected to last at least a year or cause death in order to be eligible. Notably, short-term or partial disability are not covered by Social Security.

How to Check if You’re Automatically Enrolled in VA Health Care?

Furthermore, Social Security offers two distinct programs, SSI and SSDI, each with its own qualifying requirements based on employment history and income.

Veterans’ considerations

Two applications must be submitted in order to be eligible for these rewards. Veterans who have paid Social Security taxes and have a sufficient employment history are eligible to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in addition to VA benefits.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is determined by income and resources rather than employment history, may be available to those who are in need. Important health benefits are also provided by both programs; SSDI offers Medicare following a waiting time, while SSI offers Medicaid.

Knowing your P&T status at the time of application might expedite your claim and shorten the wait time for assistance. You can apply online or get in touch with your neighborhood Social Security office if you need assistance.
