Canada Groceries Benefit October 2026: Check October 5 Payment Date And Amount

Canada’s Groceries and Essentials Benefit payment is due October 5, 2026, with eligible Canadians receiving quarterly support based on income, family size and individual circumstances.

Canada Groceries Benefit October 2026: The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) is set to reach eligible Canadians again on October 5, 2026. The benefit replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026 and provides tax-free payments every three months to help low- and modest-income individuals and families manage the cost of groceries and other everyday essentials.

The October 5 payment is the second CGEB payment of the current benefit period, which runs from July 2026 to June 2027. The CRA calculates the benefit using information from your 2025 tax return.

How Much Can You Get From the CGEB?

The amount depends on your family situation and adjusted family net income. For the July 2026 to June 2027 payment period, an eligible individual can receive up to $445 as the basic amount. There is also an additional amount for single individuals, which can bring the maximum annual payment to $679 for a single person with no children.

A couple can receive up to $890, while families can receive an additional $234 for each eligible child under 19. A single-parent family can receive $445 for the first eligible child, along with other applicable amounts.

The benefit begins to phase out as adjusted family net income rises above $46,432. This means people with higher incomes may receive a reduced amount and can eventually become ineligible. The exact reduction depends on income and family size.

The annual amount is generally divided into four payments. However, the CRA says that if the quarterly amount calculated in July 2026 is less than $50, the full benefit is paid in July instead of being split across four payments. This means the October payment won’t be the same for everyone who qualifies.

Do You Need to Apply for the October Payment?

Most Canadians don’t have to submit a separate application for the CGEB. The CRA automatically checks eligibility when you file your income tax return. This also applies to related provincial and territorial benefit programs.

The CRA says people should file their tax return every year, even when they have no income to report. The agency then uses the information from the return to calculate the benefit.

There is a separate process for new residents of Canada who haven’t yet filed their first tax return. They can apply directly to the CRA using Form RC151. New residents with children may also need to use the Canada Child Benefit application process, depending on their circumstances.

To qualify:

  • A person must be a resident of Canada for tax purposes during the required period around the payment date.
  • They must normally be at least 19 years old
  • Someone under 19 can still qualify if they have or had a spouse or common-law partner
  • Or if they are or were a parent and live or lived with their child.

Provincial Benefits Can Be Included Too

For eligible residents, the federal CGEB payment can also include certain provincial and territorial credits. These include New Brunswick’s harmonized sales tax credit, the Newfoundland and Labrador income supplement, Nova Scotia’s affordable living tax credit, Prince Edward Island’s sales tax credit and Saskatchewan’s low-income tax credit. These amounts can be combined with the federal payment.

Quebec handles its own Solidarity Tax Credit through Revenu Québec. Eligible residents can receive that payment on October 5, 2026, depending on the amount and payment schedule assigned to them.

Ontario works differently. Its sales tax credit is part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit and isn’t combined with the CGEB. The CRA’s 2026 schedule shows the next Ontario Trillium Benefit payment is due on October 9, 2026.

How To Check Your October 5 Payment

Eligible recipients can sign in to their CRA account to see the expected payment date and amount. The account also shows the payment history and benefit statement.

For 2026, the scheduled CGEB dates are July 3 and October 5, followed by January and April payments in 2027. If a payment doesn’t arrive as expected, the CRA advises checking the account and personal information first. Recipients should wait 10 working days after the scheduled date before contacting the agency.
