Chapter 1606 VA Benefits: Education and Training Benefits

The Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard Reserve, and other GI Reserves are eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve program, providing education and training benefits.

Chapter 1606 VA Benefits: There are benefits for education and training available for up to 36 months under the Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) program. You might be qualified for this benefit if you serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard. Determine your eligibility.

How to use Chapter 1606?

This kind of VA benefit, sometimes referred to as your entitlement, can provide up to 36 months of instruction and training. This will cover subjects including business, technical, or vocational schools, apprenticeships, on-the-job training, and colleges. National tests, correspondence courses with tuition help, license or certification fees.

Veterans may occasionally require refresher, deficient, and remedial training; in these situations, the Chapter 1606 benefit may be used in addition to flight training.

The kind of training determines the monthly benefit. If you are enrolled in school, the amount you receive paid depends on how much of your time—whether full- or part-time—you spend in training.

There will be an eligibility period during which you can use them if you qualify for this benefit. When your eligible period expires or you use up all of your entitlement, whichever happens first, your benefits will terminate. Generally, your qualifying period expires on the date that you are separated from Selected Reserve.
