As part of this scheme, families with children under 17 who depend on them can get a tax credit that they can’t get back.

The credit may eliminate your tax liability or reduce it by a dollar-for-dollar amount. The “additional child tax credit” may also qualify some taxpayers for a partial refund of the credit.

To be eligible, taxpayers and their children must fulfill specific requirements that consider the age of the child and the child’s relationship to the person making the claim.

For 2023, if your modified adjusted gross income is $400,000 or less (if you file jointly) or $200,000 or less (for all other filers), you will receive a child tax credit of $2,000 per qualified dependent child. The additional child tax credit, or refundable component, has a maximum value of $1,600.

The temporary increase in credit to $3,600 for children under six and $3,000 for children under eighteen is available to qualifying families whose income is less than $75,000 for singles, $112,500 for head of household, or $150,000 for joint returns.

Under the American Rescue Plan, families are now eligible to earn up to $3,000, with an additional $600 available in 2024.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is in charge of overseeing the program, which provides financial support to qualifying families—especially those with children under the age of 17—to aid them.
