Who is qualified?

At the start of the payment month, you have to meet these two requirements in order to be eligible for the CAIP:

  • Before making a payment, you must be a citizen of Canada.
  • On the first day of the payment month, you must be a citizen of a relevant CAIP province in order to be eligible.

One of the following requirements must also be met in order for you to be eligible for CAIP:

  • 19 years old before receiving an advertisement from the CRA

If any of the following apply to you and you are under 19:

  • A partner or common-law spouse is/was present.
  • You live with your child and are/were a parent.

Children who qualify

Each child who qualifies for CCB will have a credit added to the CAIP estimate.

At the start of the payment month, each of the following requirements must be satisfied in order to have an eligible child:

  • Your youngster is not yet nineteen.
  • You live with your child.
  • You are responsible for the upkeep and rearing of your child.
  • Your child has a CCB registration.

You will receive half of what you would have gotten if the child lived with you full-time if you split control with your ex-spouse.

How money is received

There is a primary amount and a rural supplement that make up the CAIP.

How to get the basic amount of CAIP

Your eligibility for the CAIP will depend on whether you are a novice or a citizen of Canada.

If you’re a Canadian citizen

Canadian citizens don’t need to apply for the CAIP. All you have to do is submit your income tax and benefit return, and you will receive the amounts you are eligible for.

Only one of you may receive the household payment if you have a common-law spouse or partner. The first person to file their tax return will receive it, but the amount remains the same for each recipient.

Remember to file an income tax and benefit return each year, even if you have no revenue to report, to continue receiving the CAIP.

If you’ve never been to Canada before

Applying for the CAIP as a new Canadian citizen requires following these steps.

1. Fill out the appropriate form or forms:

If you are a parent

If you’re not a parent

2. Send the tax center the completed form or forms.

How to apply for the rural CAIP supplement

There is a supplement to the CAIP for residents of tiny and rural neighborhoods. Check the box on page 2 of your tax return to claim it.

Prince Edward Island residents are exempt from filing a separate tax return for the rural supplement because it is already included in the principal amount.

Note: With a retroactive payment for the 2022 base year, the 2022 rural supplement question for residents of small and rural areas in New Brunswick will appear on the 2023 tax return.

Along with the CAIP basic amounts, the supplement is awarded to the spouse or spouses who file their returns first. To prevent ambiguities, jointly answer the question on page 2 if you both reside in a small rural community.

If you qualify for the rural supplement, you can apply by calling 1-800-387-1193 or by checking the box on page 2 of your income tax return.

What is the highest amount paid by CAIP?

The reward for the 2024 climate action incentive is increasing by 10%. The federal government will make the first payment on January 15, 2024. The benefits of this payout, often known as the carbon tax rebate, outweigh increased environmental costs. The majority of CAIP payments are awarded to residents over 19 who file their income tax returns.

CAIP will be distributed at different rates according to provinces and adult recipients in 2024. The maximum national CAIP payment amounts for each province are listed below.

No. of Recipients Alberta Ontario Prince Edward Island Manitoba Nova Scotia
1 772 CAD 488 CAD 480 CAD 528 CAD 496 CAD

3 193 CAD 122 CAD 120 CAD 132 CAD 124 CAD
4 1544 CAD 976 CAD 960 CAD 1056 CAD 992 CAD

When to anticipate receiving payment

Payments will be made to you on April 15, July 15, October 15, and January 15 if you are approved for the CAIP. In case the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment will be processed on the final working day preceding it.

New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador citizens will receive payments in the first year. Both the July and October sums are included in the October 2023 payment for New Brunswick.

Your CAIP will be deposited immediately if you want to receive your tax return that way as well. If you have signed up for direct deposit, check your bank account for the “Climate Action Incentive.” You should wait ten working days to visit www.canada.ca if you do not receive your CAIP on time.
