Replace a Social Security Card in 2026: Americans who have lost, damaged or misplaced their Social Security card can now complete much of the replacement process online, with the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) saying the digital application is the fastest option for most eligible applicants. The SSA says many people may not even need a physical Social Security card, as simply knowing their Social Security number is sufficient for most transactions. However, if a replacement card is required for employment, banking or other official purposes, the agency encourages applicants to begin the process online rather than visiting a field office without an appointment.
