New York is sending $400 one-time inflation payments to eligible residents this fall 2025. Payments are automatic, based on income and tax filing status, aiming to ease rising living costs.

Inflation Refund in New York: New York State is giving millions of residents a one-time “inflation refund” this fall to help families handle rising prices. The state government said that eligible people do not need to apply because the checks will be sent automatically. Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the payments will start in October and continue through November 2025. The refund is a surplus in state sales tax collections and aims to return some money to families who need it most.

Eligibility and Payment Amounts

The amount you get depends on your income and filing status.

  • Single filers earning $75,000 or less will get $200, and
  • Those earning between $75,001 and $150,000 will get $150.
  • Married couples filing jointly can receive $400 if their income is $150,000 or less and $300 if their income is between $150,001 and $300,000.

Other categories like heads of households, surviving spouses, or those filing separately also have set payment amounts based on income. Residents must not be claimed as dependents on someone else’s tax return to qualify.

A person will be eligible if:

  • File Form IT-201, Resident Income Tax Return.
  • Declare income within qualifying thresholds.
  • Not be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return.

Inflation Refund in New York: Important Details

The Department of Taxation and Finance will mail over 8 million checks starting at the end of September 2025. Delivery will happen over several weeks, so some people may get their checks earlier or later than others.

Even those who received their 2023 tax refund via direct deposit will get this payment as a paper check. Residents who moved after filing their 2023 tax return should update their address to avoid delays. People who did not file a 2023 New York tax return will not receive the refund. The payment will not be used to offset debts.

The program helps families pay for daily stuff and fight high prices. People who qualify will get the money automatically. Some can get up to $400. Check the New York State Tax website for details.
