IRS Tax Refund Payments May Arrive for More Filers Between May 18-24

Taxpayers whose IRS returns were accepted between May 10 and May 16 may receive direct deposit refunds around May 22, while paper checks for some filers could arrive closer to May 29.

IRS Tax Refund Payments May: Some taxpayers are still waiting for their federal refund, and the week of May 18 to May 24 may be an important one. The main thing to look at is not the day a return was sent. It is the day the IRS accepted it. The IRS says most refunds come within 21 days when people file online, choose direct deposit, and do not have problems that need extra review.

That means the people most likely to be watching closely right now are the ones whose returns were accepted in the middle of May. The IRS also says refund status is usually available 24 hours after an e-filed current-year return is accepted.

Accepted between May 10 and May 16

According to The College Investor’s 2026 IRS Tax Refund Calendar, tax returns accepted between May 10 and May 16 may have direct deposits sent around May 22. For people in the same acceptance window who are getting a paper check, the expected mail date is May 29. The calendar is only an estimate, but it gives taxpayers a rough idea of when money may show up if everything is moving normally.

The same calendar also says taxpayers whose returns were accepted between May 3 and May 9 may still be waiting on paper checks around May 22. That is why this week can feel crowded. Some refunds may already be arriving, while others are still in transit or waiting to be mailed.

Next Batch

Returns accepted between May 17 and May 23 are listed in the next refund group. For those filers, The College Investor’s calendar shows May 29 as the estimated direct deposit date and June 5 as the estimated paper check date. So a person could be in the same overall week and still be at a very different stage in the process.

The IRS opened the 2026 filing season on January 26, 2026, and it is processing 2025 federal income tax returns during that season.

A Refund can Come Later

Not every return moves on the fastest track. The IRS says refunds can take longer than 21 days if the return has errors, is missing information, may involve identity theft or fraud, or needs more review. Bank processing can also slow things down after the IRS sends the payment. If direct deposit information is wrong, the refund can be delayed or another notice may be sent.

Earlier in the season, some taxpayers also had to wait longer because of the PATH Act rules for the Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit. The IRS said those refunds could not go out before mid-February, and many eligible direct deposit refunds were expected by March 2 if there were no other issues.

How to check your refund?

The best place to look is the IRS refund tracker, “Where’s My Refund?”, or the IRS2Go app. The IRS says the tracker updates only once per day, usually overnight. That means checking it again and again during the same day will not usually show anything new.
