Many Americans are still waiting for IRS tax refunds in July 2026. Payment dates depend on when the return was accepted, filing method, and whether direct deposit or paper check was chosen.
July 2026 IRS Refund Schedule: Tax season may feel finished, but many Americans can still get IRS refunds in July 2026. The main thing that changes the timing is when the return was accepted, how it was filed, and whether the person chose direct deposit or a mailed check. The IRS says refunds are usually easiest to track after the return is in the system, and direct deposit is still the fastest way to get money back.
Kiplinger says most people who file electronically and choose direct deposit usually get their refund in about three weeks. Paper returns, mailed checks, and returns with problems can take longer. The IRS also says a paper check generally takes one to three weeks longer than a direct deposit.
Alaska Dividend Payments July 2026: Payment Date, $1,000 Amount and Eligibility
The College Investor’s 2026 IRS Tax Refund Calendar gives estimated dates based on when the IRS accepted a return. These are only estimates, not guaranteed payment days.
Some refunds move slowly because of simple problems like mistakes on the return, missing information, identity checks, or credits that need extra review. Kiplinger also reported this year’s refund process has been affected by confusion around electronic payments and notices linked to direct deposit verification.
The IRS and Taxpayer Advocate Service have also noted that if direct deposit information needs to be fixed, taxpayers may be asked to respond before a paper check is issued later.
Refunds can also be delayed when people do not use direct deposit. The IRS has said paper refund checks for individual taxpayers are being phased out, beginning September 30, 2025, as part of the move toward electronic payments. That is another reason many July refunds are expected to arrive by direct deposit first.
