September 2026 Tax Refund Payments: All Deposits You May Get Next Month

September 2026 refund payments may reach Americans through federal or state tax refunds. Learn when deposits could arrive, how refund timing works, and how to check your payment status.

September 2026 Tax Refund Payments: Americans who are still waiting for a federal tax refund could receive their money during September 2026. There isn’t one fixed IRS payment day for everyone. Refunds are sent after each tax return is processed and approved. The timing can be different from one taxpayer to another.

For most people, filing electronically and choosing direct deposit is still the quickest way to get a refund. The IRS says most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but some returns can take longer when extra checking or corrections are needed.

Which IRS Refunds will Arrive in September 2026?

People whose returns are processed and approved around the start of September could see their refunds arrive during the month. The IRS doesn’t set a special September refund schedule, so the payment date depends mainly on when the return was filed, how it was filed and whether there are any problems with it.

An e-filed return with direct deposit will normally be much faster. The IRS says the usual time is around three weeks after filing. Paper returns can take 6 weeks or more to process. Some refunds are also delayed because the return needs corrections, extra review or other manual work.

People claiming certain tax credits may also face extra processing time. The IRS says the Additional Child Tax Credit and some other situations can require more review before the refund is released.

The IRS has also started moving away from paper tax refund checks. Beginning September 30, 2025, the agency began phasing out paper refund checks for individual taxpayers as part of the move toward electronic payments. Direct deposit is now the preferred and faster option in most cases. Some exceptions can still apply.

How to Check Your IRS Refund Status

Taxpayers don’t have to guess when their money is coming. The IRS provides the Where’s My Refund? tool for checking the status of a federal refund. For a current-year return filed electronically, refund information can usually appear within 24 hours after the IRS receives it. For a paper return, the wait can be around 4 weeks before information appears in the tracker.

To check the status, you’ll generally need your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status and the exact refund amount shown on your return. The tracker moves through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. Once the refund is approved, the IRS can provide a personalized date for when it expects to send the money.

The IRS also offers refund information through its mobile app and Individual Online Account. Taxpayers can even opt in for refund status email notifications through the online account.

Are Tariff Refunds Coming to Consumers in September 2026?

Tariff refund stories have also been appearing in the news, but they shouldn’t be confused with regular IRS tax refunds. A tariff is paid on imported goods, usually by the importer. Any refund related to tariffs isn’t automatically a new payment that every household can expect to receive.

There isn’t a confirmed nationwide September 2026 tariff refund check or direct deposit for all Americans based on current official IRS information. For someone waiting for money from the IRS, the payment is more likely to be a normal federal income tax refund already connected to a filed return.
