Social Security Disability payment: Who will receive it this Wednesday?

The Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 requires 290 out of 435 House representatives to pass, with 300 signing on. If not passed, it will need reintroduction in the next Congress.

Social Security Disability payment: To pass the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 (H.R. 82) in the House, it now requires a supermajority, meaning it needs 290 out of 435 representatives to approve it, due to a procedural motion that tabled the bill. As of now, 300 representatives have signed on, including Speaker Mike Johnson, though this was before he took office.

The bill will then need to pass the Senate during the lame-duck session, where it will likely require 60 votes to pass, depending on opposition from the Freedom Caucus. If the bill clears the Senate, it will go to President Biden’s desk for signing. However, if it does not pass before the 118th Congress concludes, it will need to be reintroduced in the next Congress and go through the legislative process again.
