Stimulus Payment for Immigrants: Are New Immigrants Eligible for Stimulus Checks

New immigrants may receive stimulus checks from federal and state governments to help them survive the unstable cost of living crisis and maintain economic activity.

Stimulus Payment for Immigrants: Since winter is coming and the unstable cost of living crisis is getting worse, can new immigrants get stimulus checks from the federal and state governments to help them make ends meet?

The goal of stimulus checks is to “stimulate” (encourage) economic activity among the people by giving them a set amount of money every month to spend on things like groceries and other necessities, staying out of poverty, or just going shopping to support the economy.

The most well-known example from recent times is probably the $1,400 executive COVID-19 stimulus checks that the government gives to people they think will have a hard time getting by during this economic downturn.

The maximum income limit for single filers is $80,000, and the maximum income limit for married couples filing jointly is $160,000. Heads of household are also limited to a maximum of $120,000.

A resident who has been granted permission to live in the United States and has a social security number should file their 2020 and 2021 taxes as soon as possible. They have until April 18, 2025, to use the Recovery Rebate Credit to claim any unclaimed stimulus checks.

Furthermore, the government can use stimulus checks to incentivize citizens and residents to invest in sectors of the economy that are necessary for meeting certain goals, like distributing electrical vehicles to combat climate change or heat pumps to replace gas and electric boilers.

Can foreign nationals apply for COVID-19 stimulus?

Yes, immigrants may be eligible for stimulus payments under specific circumstances. In the last round of COVID-19 stimulus payments, set to be distributed in the latter half of 2024, certain immigrants can claim the payment. To qualify, an immigrant must either be married to or a dependent of a resident who has a valid Social Security number, or they must be an eligible foreign resident or permanent resident themselves.

This means that immigrants who meet these conditions can claim up to $1,400 individually. For example, a family of four could potentially receive up to $5,600 from the government. This assistance aims to help individuals and families, including immigrants, cope with economic challenges caused by the pandemic.
