Tax Deadline for 2024: For millions of Americans, the start of a new year signifies opportunity and hope, but it also may be time to take care of your taxes.

Nobody enjoys doing their taxes; it is a laborious and confusing job that many put off until the last moment.

The most crucial information to be aware of is the 2024 tax return filing date, as there may be severe consequences if you miss it.

When is the tax deadline for 2024?

For the majority of Americans, the 2024 tax year ends on April 15, 2024. You still have choices if you are unable to file before that deadline.

You can request an extension. If you file an extension, you will have until October 15, 2024, or six more months, to file a complete return. You must estimate the amount of taxes you think you will owe and include the payment with your extension form if you think you will owe taxes.

Without an extension, you can file a late return. You might not be penalized if you expect a refund or if you have no outstanding taxes. If you file after the deadline and owe taxes, there can be a penalty.

Should Social Security recipients file a tax return in 2024?

If you anticipate receiving a refund or if you do not have any taxes that are still owed, you could not be punished. Despite this, it is recommended that you complete your tax return as soon as possible to receive your refund or to ensure that you do not owe anything.

The situation can be slightly different in several states. Because Patriot’s Day and Emancipation Day each have their respective holidays, the deadline for those who live in Maine or Massachusetts is April 17th.

If you reside in an area that has been declared a federal disaster, you may also have an extension of time to file.
