For this winter, the energy price cap will be lowered by Ofgem, but one in three people will still have to pay more for their gas and electricity.

As the cost of living problem continues, people have had to deal with rising energy bills and inflation.

After the Warm Home Discount plan was changed in 2022, eligible households in England and Wales should get the discount without having to apply. Before, some had to do so.

In order to get the warm home discount, both the customer and their supplier must give it and meet the requirements.

This year, the “big six” energy companies—including British Gas, Octopus Energy, and EDF—are all taking part in the program.

The following companies are part of the plan.

No one will get the Warm Home Discount if they don’t buy from one of these companies:

  • Affect Energy (now part of Octopus Energy)
  • Boost Energy
  • British Gas (including Scottish Gas)
  • Bulb (now part of Octopus Energy)
  • Co-op Energy (now part of Octopus Energy)
  • E (gas and electricity)
  • E.on Next
  • Ecotricity
  • EDF Energy
  • Good Energy
  • London Power
  • Octopus Energy
  • Outfox the Market
  • Ovo Energy
  • Rebel Energy
  • Sainsbury’s Energy
  • Scottish Power
  • Shell Energy
  • So Energy
  • SSE (now part of Ovo Energy)
  • SSE Southern Electric (now part of Ovo)
  • SSE Scottish Hydro (now part of Ovo)
  • SSE Swalec (now part of Ovo Energy)
  • Tomato Energy
  • Tru Energy
  • Utilita
  • Utility Warehouse
  • 100Green (previously Green Energy UK)

Who can get the deal for a warm home?

People in England and Wales who get the “guarantee element” of Pension Credit should get it automatically.

As part of “core group 1,” they should be able to get the discount if they or their partner were getting guarantee credit on August 13, 2023, and if their name (or the name of their partner) is on their energy bill.

Those who are on certain benefits and have “high energy costs” are also qualified.

People who get certain benefits based on their income, like Income Support or Universal Credit, may be able to get the rate. This group is called “core group 2.”

On August 13, 2023, Britons must have been getting the benefit that qualified them.
