Social Security benefits will rise by 3.6% in 2027, giving retirees extra money each month, but future payments could face cuts if Congress fails to fix funding problems.
Social Security Benefits to Rise in 2027: Millions of Americans receiving Social Security benefits will get a payment increase in 2027. The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on October 14, 2026. The increase is expected to give the average retired worker around $75 more per month.
The higher payments are meant to help people manage rising costs of food, housing, healthcare and other daily needs. Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive the increase from January 2027. Around 7.3 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will start getting higher payments on December 31, 2026. In total, the changes will affect around 76 million people, including those who receive both types of benefits.
Social Security Claiming Age Clarity Act: Retirement Age Is Not Going Up
But there are still concerns about Social Security’s future. Government projections warn that its retirement fund could run short of reserves in the coming years if Congress doesn’t take action. This has raised questions about whether retirees could face lower payments in the future.
Social Security mainly gets its money from taxes paid by workers and employers. It also has trust funds that help pay benefits when regular income isn’t enough to cover the full amount.
According to the 2026 Social Security trustees’ report, the fund that pays retirement and survivor benefits could run out of its reserves in the fourth quarter of 2032. If that happens and lawmakers don’t change the law, the money coming in would cover only around 78% of scheduled benefits.
This doesn’t mean the government has announced a 22% cut. It’s a warning about what could happen if the funding problem isn’t fixed before the reserves run out.
The outlook is different when the retirement, survivor and disability funds are considered together. Their combined reserves are projected to run out in 2034. At that point, incoming money could cover around 83% of scheduled payments under current estimates. These are projections, and the actual situation could change with the economy or new laws.
