Use Your FSA Before It Expires: Hidden Eligible Items You Might Miss

Many Americans rush to spend their FSA money before year-end, but most people still don’t know the huge list of items that qualify. Learning these options can help avoid losing unused funds.

FSA Hidden Eligible Items: As the year comes close to ending, many Americans with Flexible Spending Accounts are trying to figure out what to do with the leftover money. FSAs follow the rule that you must spend the money before the year ends unless your job gives a small carry-over or a short grace time. A lot of workers feel confused because they do not know which things they can buy with these funds.

Tax specialist Lisa Greene-Lewis has warned people many times that this lack of knowledge causes millions of dollars to go unused each year. A report from the FSA Store in 2024 showed that a big part of FSA users leave money behind simply because they do not know the full list of allowed items.

Many everyday Items count as well

More people are now finding out that FSA money covers way more than doctor bills or prescriptions. The IRS changed the rules in recent years, and now a long list of simple daily-use items is allowed. This gives families a chance to stretch their savings when health costs keep going up.

Things like menstrual care products, sunscreen with SPF, motion sickness medicines, bandages, baby thermometers, and some heating pads are allowed. Many over-the-counter medicines also qualify even when you do not have a prescription. These changes help families who buy these things often and want to lower their spending.

Consumer expert Andrea Woroch has seen many people make mistakes because they assume FSAs only cover major medical things. She said, “People would be surprised by how many items they can buy using their FSA card,” and she tells shoppers to plan early so they do not rush at the last minute.

More workers now use FSA money for common items like allergy medicine, diabetes supplies, and glasses. Some people even stock up before the new year begins so they do not start January unprepared.

Check your Rules Before It’s too ate

Luke Nygard, who appeared in a year-end financial segment, reminded people of the basic truth behind these accounts. He said, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” He also shared that some employers let workers carry over up to $640, while others only offer a short grace period. Because each company sets its own rules, checking these details is important.

A quick look at an FSA list can help people learn that many simple things qualify, such as contact lens solution, first-aid items, postpartum care tools, or basic pain medicine. The list is much bigger than most people think.
