We all have the irresistible impulse to kick a rock lying at our feet, and a football is simply a larger and lighter version of a round stone. Consequently, every civilization has had its own variant of football since the dawn of time.

National Football Day is observed annually on 28 July. It recognises and commemorates football, one of the most competitive and popular sports in the world. More than 17 million (approximately 5%) Americans watch National Football League (NFL) football matches annually.

The background of National Soccer Day

We all have the irresistible impulse to kick a rock lying at our feet, and a football is simply a larger and lighter version of a round stone. Consequently, every civilization has had its own variant of football since the dawn of time. In ancient China, a form of football known as ‘cuju’ was played with a ball made of leather and feathers. Later, Cuju spread to Japan, where it was known as ‘kemari.’ Similarly, the Aztecs played a ritualistic game known as ‘ollama,’ in which the ball represented the sun and the commander of the losing team was sometimes sacrificed to the gods. Later, the Mesoamericans played a comparable game with rubber balls, which were absent in other cultures.

Modern soccer’s origins can be traced to London. It was contested in both rugby and Eton styles. Initially, the game regulations were lax and there were few restrictions; consequently, many people participated in the sport. However, the absence of rules frequently lead to violent matches and fatalities. The game’s violent nature and high injury rate eventually led to a nationwide ban. However, because the game was so popular, restrictions were immediately lifted.

A few centuries later, in 1863, London established the first football association. The association established and standardised the initial iteration of football rules. In addition, they prohibited the use of hands and established guidelines for the size and weight of the game’s object. The new set of rules and regulations divided the sport into two categories: football and rugby. Rugby allows players to sprint while holding the ball, whereas football does not. Over time, the popularity of the game spread from England to its colonies, such as the United States.
