Nihonshu no Hi, or World Sake Day, began in 1978 when the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association (J.S.S.) designated October 1 as a day to celebrate sake.

John A. Dalles, a Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA) minister, investigated the history of this day. Dr. Hugh Thompson Kerr, rector of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, had the idea that this day should be observed.
