Bill Hicks Biography: Bill Hicks was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, and musician who was born on December 16, 1961. His reputation as a “comedian’s comedian” was well-known. Before turning into a stand-up comedian, Hicks started out as a member of a humorous duo with Dwight Slade, a friend from childhood. Despite being American, he had a larger following in the UK, where his tours filled large arenas. Along with being a songwriter and guitarist, Hicks collaborated with progressive metal acts like Tool. His fight with pancreatic cancer lasted a year, and on February 26, 1994, he passed away.

Early Life

William Melvin Hicks, better known as Bill Hicks, was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on December 16, 1961. He came from a pious Southern Baptist family and was the youngest of three children. Before relocating the family to Houston, Texas, his father, James Melvin Hicks, an executive at General Motors, had them live in Florida, Alabama, and New Jersey. Hicks and his friend Dwight would perform for their peers in high school, much to their delight. When Hicks was fifteen, he started going out late at night to perform with Slade at a brand-new comedy club.

Career

As his family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, Hicks decided to remain in Houston and complete his high school education. He was in a garage rock band at the time, and he sang and played guitar. After that, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he frequently appeared at the Comedy Store with a number of well-known comedians. He relocated to New York City in the late 1980s, where he obtained his first professional contract, put out his debut video, “Sane Man,” and gave roughly 300 performances over the following five years.

Hicks released “Dangerous,” his debut comedy album, in 1990. He appeared in an H.B.O. special and the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. He made a tour of the United Kingdom in November of that year to great acclaim from audiences there.

Bill Hicks recorded the albums “Rant in E-Minor” and “Arizona Bay,” released the album “Relentless,” and traveled throughout Australia in 1992 and 1993. He started chemotherapy after receiving a pancreatic cancer diagnosis in June 1993. He made his twelfth appearance as a guest on CBS’s “Late Night with David Letterman” in October of that year. Hicks’ final performance was at Carolines on Broadway in New York on January 6, 1994. He passed away at the home of his parents in Arkansas the following month.
