William Melvin Hicks, better known as Bill Hicks, was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on December 16, 1961. He came from a pious Southern Baptist family and was the youngest of three children. Before relocating the family to Houston, Texas, his father, James Melvin Hicks, an executive at General Motors, had them live in Florida, Alabama, and New Jersey.
