SSDI Payment May 2024
Social Security October Payment Schedule: Social Security payments usually arrive on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month. The payment date depends on your birth date, but there are some exceptions. Here’s who can get benefits, when payments arrive and what to do if your money is late.
Social Security Benefits to Rise 3.6% in 2027, But Future Cuts Remain a Concern
According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), payment dates usually depend on your birth date.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments usually arrive on the first of each month. If that date falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are made on the previous business day.
Most people receive Social Security benefits through direct deposit into their bank accounts. Payments can also be loaded onto a Direct Express Debit Mastercard. Federal benefit payments are generally made electronically, with a few exceptions.
If someone else has received their payment but yours hasn’t arrived, don’t panic immediately. Payments are sent on different dates depending on the recipient’s birth date.
Direct deposits usually appear by 9 a.m. on the payment date. If your money is missing, check with your bank first to see if there is a delay. Paper checks can take up to three business days to arrive. If yours still hasn’t arrived, contact the SSA at 800-772-1213 or log in to your My Social Security account.
Social Security 2027 COLA: Check the New Increase and Payment Dates
This free online account lets you manage benefits, check applications, estimate future payments and request a replacement Social Security card. Make sure the SSA has your correct bank details and address.
You can apply through your My Social Security account or arrange an appointment with an agent. The SSA says it usually takes at least a month to receive your first payment after processing your application.
Staff shortages and computer problems have raised concerns about delays. During an April operations meeting, an SSA official said field offices “are struggling right now to keep pace with the timeliness this year.”
Jason Fichtner, executive director of the Retirement Income Institute and a former SSA official, also warned: “With SSA staff being reduced while the agency was already operating at insufficient support levels and computer systems in need of modernization, continued service delays, and breakdowns are likely.”
