Charlie Wilson Birthday

Charlie Kent Wilson was born on January 29, 1953, and he attended high school at Booker T. Washington in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Wilson’s participation in the junior high school chorus laid the groundwork for his future musical career. Upon enrolling at Langston University, he became the drum major for the Langston University Marching Pride.

In 1967, he and his brothers formed The Gap Band, which quickly became synonymous with an exuberant, widely popular brand of funk music. They released their debut album, “Magicians Holiday,” on Shelter Records in 1974. The Gap Band released a total of fifteen albums before disbanding in 2010. They had a string of major singles, including ‘Outstanding,’ ‘Party Train,’ ‘Yearning For Your Love,’ ‘Burn Rubber on Me,’ and ‘You Dropped a Bomb on Me.’ Wilson recorded five solo albums during his tenure with the band: “You Turn My Life Around” (1992), “Bridging the Gap” (2000), “Charlie, Last Name Wilson” (2005), “Uncle Charlie” (2009), and “Just Charlie” (2010). The final three albums were distributed by Jive Records, including “Charlie, Last Name Wilson,” which was certified gold by the R.I.A.A. and featured several successful producers.

After his band disbanded, he recorded three further albums: “Love, Charlie” (2013), “Forever Charlie” (2015), and “In it to win it” (2017). Wilson has been nominated for thirteen Grammys, including Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Album, and Best Rap Song/Collaboration. 2014’s “Love, Charlie” earned him two N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards for ‘Outstanding Album,’ and 2018’s Music Makes a Difference Award. As a solo performer and as a member of The Gap Band, he has also received several significant honours and accolades. With P Music/Jive Records, he has consistently topped the Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary chart. Wilson’s career includes a number of fruitful collaborations, and he has been on the songs and albums of other renowned musicians, including Snoop Dogg, Eurythmics, R. Kelly, Kanye West, and Bruno Mars.

Wilson devotes the most of his time to aiding American troops, especially in the Middle East. Prior to 1995, he struggled with alcohol and drug addictions and joined a rehabilitation programme. In the same year, he wed his social worker, Mahin Tat. In 2008, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which was successfully treated with implants. Wilson continues to urge Black men to have prostate cancer screenings through the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
