Perez joined Shelly Lares’ band with reluctance in 1986, as he disliked Tejano music, which is described as “a mixture of traditional Mexican folk music, polkas, and country music sung in Spanish or English.”
Perez joined Selena y Los Dinos in 1989, and although this was also Tejano music, he preferred the band because it was more “hip and sophisticated.” In 1992, after a difficult beginning to their relationship, Perez and Selena eloped in Nueces County, Texas; however, the union was short-lived, as Selena was murdered by one of her employees in 1995. Perez remarried Venessa Villanueva in 2001, and the couple has two children: a boy named Noah and a daughter named Cassie. They separated in 2008.
In 2010, Perez formed the Chris Perez Project alongside Puerto Rican singer Angel Ferrer, publishing the album “Todo es Diferente.” In March of 2012, Perez published “To Selena, With Love,” which portrayed their relationship and conflicts. In 2021, Perez’s new record label, Blue Mariachi Productions, contracted ZEUS as its first entertainment act. The name El Mero Necio. The accomplished guitarist is still active in the music industry, with no signs of slowing down.
