Mercury, the son of a local government official, was reared as a Zoroastrian and demonstrated an early interest in music. He moved to England at the age of 17 to attend London’s Ealing Art College, where he founded Queen, one of rock’s most iconic bands. Mercury’s ostentatious stage presence and commanding vocals helped propel the band to international fame. As AIDS began to take its toll, he waited until shortly before his demise in 1991 to reveal his condition.

Freddie Mercury Birthday

In this success story, we discuss the life of Freddie Mercury, British vocalist-songwriter, producer, unparalleled performer, and four-octave vocal range Queen lead singer. He spent the majority of his childhood in India and began piano lessons at age seven. The boys’ choir was his first musical experience. Mercury participated in school musicals and established his first band, The Hectics, when he was 12 years old.

At the beginning of his musical career, he was a member of the ensemble Smile, alongside future Queen guitarist and drummer Brian May and Roger Summers. Soon after discovering his passion for art and music, which he studied avidly (around this time, he began taking piano lessons), the singer put his newly discovered aptitude for piano to good use by playing in bands and rock and roll with his friends.

The following year, John Deacon joined the rock band, and Mercury chose the name ‘Queen’ despite opposition from band members and management. Mercury met Roger Taylor (drums) and Brian May (guitar) in the 1960s when he moved to London. Mercury, a founding member of Queen since the band’s inception in 1970, wowed audiences worldwide with his majestic vocals until his tragic demise at age 45 in 1991. Mercury remains one of the world’s most renowned and iconic vocalists. His life and career were marked with incredible highs and tragic lows, leaving behind an enduring legacy.
