H. D. Deve Gowda Biography: Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda born May 18, 1933 is an Indian politician who served as India’s eleventh prime minister from June 1, 1996, to April 21, 1997. He served as the fourteenth Chief Minister of Karnataka between 1994 and 1996. Currently, he represents Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha as a member of parliament. He is the president of the Janata Dal (Secular) party at the national level. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1953 and remained a member until 1962.

H. D. Deve Gowda was born on 18 May 1933 in Haradanahalli, a village in the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore’s Holenarasipura Taluk (now Hassan, Karnataka). His paddy farmer father, Dodde Gowda, and homemaker mother, Devamma, raised him.
In the early 1950s, Gowda earned a diploma in civil engineering from L. V. Polytechnic, Hassan.
In 1953, Deve Gowda joined the Indian National Congress party, where he remained until 1962. He was elected from the Holenarasipura constituency to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1962 and served as the Assembly’s Leader of the Opposition from 1972 to 1976 and again from November 1976 to December 1977. He was incarcerated in the Bangalore Central Jail during the Emergency (1975–1977). From 1983 to 1988, he served as a minister in the Janata Party-led government in Karnataka, led by Ramakrishna Hegde. He was twice the state unit president of the Janata Party. When V P Singh joined Janata Dal, Subramanian Swamy formed Janata Party (JP)’s Karnataka President.
In 1994, he was elected president of the state branch of the Janata Dal and was the primary force behind the party’s victory in the 1994 State Assembly elections. Gowda toured Switzerland and attended the Forum of International Economists in January 1995. In the general elections of 1996, the Congress party led by P. V. Narasimha Ra was victorious. Raj Narayan founded the Janata Dal (Secular) in 1988, and it is attributed with providing financial closure and launching the development of the Delhi Metro Project. The Janata Dal (Secular) traces its origins to the Janata Party (Secular), which was established by Raj Narayan.
In 1989, when he led the National Front government, Vishwanath Pratap Singh became India’s first Prime Minister from the Janata Dal. In 1999, when some prominent party leaders decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the party split into factions.
