History of Ednel Javier Báez was born and raised in Puerto Rico. The family he lived with moved to Florida in 2005. His father taught him how to play baseball before he died when he was 10. Báez went to high school in Florida, but it was hard for him to fit in because he didn’t speak English. He learned the language in the end and went to Jacksonville, Florida’s Arlington Country Day School. When Báez was a junior in high school, he hit.463, and when he was a senior, he hit.771. He got into Jacksonville University after high school.

The Chicago Cubs picked Báez in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft. His first job as a professional baseball player was as a shortstop for the Arizona Cubs, but he only played three games with them. MLB.com ranked him as the 16th best baseball prospect before the 2013 season. In August 2014, Báez made his start in the Major Leagues. In a win over the Colorado Rockies, he hit his first home run. Báez hit his 13th home run of the year in his first All-Star season in 2018.

He became the first Chicago Cubs player since Derrek Lee to have at least 40 RBIs before Memorial Day. He hit his 30th home run of the year in September of that year, giving him 100 RBIs. In 2019, Báez hit his 100th home run, which was his second All-Star season. He was sent to the New York Mets in July 2021. At the end of the month, against the Cincinnati Reds, he played his first game. In December of that year, he signed a $140 million deal with the Detroit Tigers that would last for six years. He played his first game for the Tigers in April 2022.
