John Forbes Kerry is an American politician, lawyer, war veteran, former senator from Massachusetts, and the country’s first Special Presidential Envoy for climate change. Kerry has served the public for almost sixty years, leading a colorful and intriguing life. Kerry was raised in an affluent and well-connected Aurora, Colorado, family. His father was a marine and foreign service diplomat, which may have contributed to his interest in politics and diplomacy. He attended some of the greatest and most prestigious boarding schools and universities in the world to finish his education. In 1966, having graduated from Yale, he joined the Naval Reserve. After serving in the military for three years, he was awarded a Silver and Purple Star. He joined the non-profit Vietnam Veterans Against the War (V.V.A.W.) after the war to protest the official State Department position on the conflict in Vietnam.

John Kerry: Career

In 1972, Kerry launched his political career with an unsuccessful bid for Congress. Ten years later, the newly admitted attorney and Assistant District Attorney, running on the Democratic ticket alongside Michael Dukakis, won the lieutenant governorship. He was chosen to serve as the senator from Massachusetts in 1984 and remained in office until 2012. One could characterize his leadership style as goal-oriented, goal-focused, and empowering. Kerry, one of the Democratic party’s most liberal senators, has long been an outspoken advocate for women’s rights. He was appointed as the United States’ first climate envoy due to his acute attention to environmental issues.

The successful negotiations of the Iran nuclear deal, the Paris Climate Agreement, and raising public awareness of the dangers posed by climate change are just a few of Kerry’s many accomplishments as a renowned statesman and elite diplomat. Even in his late seventies, he still has the energy and zeal of a novice.
