In Houston, where he attended Waltrip High School for high school and San Jacinto College Central for college, he resided. While in elementary school, Swayze pursued his passion for ballet. However, when he entered high school, he abandoned ballet to pursue sports such as swimming, football, and gymnastics. He also practised martial arts techniques such as Wushu, Aikido, and Taekwondo. He was offered dance and athletic scholarships after graduation. At San Jacinto College, he chose to pursue gymnastics. After two years, he toured with the Disney on Ice Parade performance as Snow White’s Prince Charming. He moved to New York City to refine his dance abilities at Harkness Ballet and Joffrey Ballet Schools and was hired as a principal dancer by Eliot Feld Ballet Company. Soon after, his high school knee injury affected his career, and he was forced to resign.

1976 marked the beginning of Swayze’s acting career with his Broadway debut in “Goodtime Charley.” In 1979, he made his film début as Ace in the American comedy musical “Skatetown, U.S.A.” In 1981, he appeared in “Return of the Rebel” and “Blood Brothers,” whereas in 1983, he portrayed a gang leader named “Bandit” in “The Renegades,” an American action crime film. In 1983, when he appeared in the coming-of-age drama film “The Outsiders,” Swayze’s celebrity status was well-established. In 1987, he became Hollywood’s darling after starring in the romantic drama “Dirty Dancing.” As Sam Wheat, he starred in the highest-grossing film of 1990, “Ghost,” which he also acted in. His performance in the film garnered him a nomination for a Golden Globe.

People Magazine deemed Swayze “The Sexiest Man Alive” in 1991. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1997. Together with his wife, Lisa Niemi, he co-produced and starred in the dance film “One Last Dance” in 2003.

Swayze led an extraordinary existence, as he won awards throughout his career and was nominated for two Golden Globes. He was married to the actress Lisa Niemi, but the couple did not have any children. He claimed that Niemi was the inspiration for his 1987 composition “She’s Like the Wind.” He was admitted to the hospital in January 2009 due to complications from Pneumonia and was also diagnosed with cancer. Doctors informed him in April of the same year that his malignancy had spread to his liver. On September 14, 2009, he perished at age 57, surrounded by his family. His ashes were scattered throughout his New Mexico ranch after he was cremated.
