Pramukh Swami Maharaj Biography: On December 7, 1921, Pramukh Swami Maharaj was born as Shantilal Patel. He served as the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha’s (B.A.P.S.) guru and “pramukh,” or president. For those who follow B.A.P.S., he is considered the fifth spiritual heir of Swaminarayan. His devotees thought that he was a manifestation of God and was in continual communication with Swaminarayan while he was alive.

Maharaj’s parents, who were adherents of the Akshar Purushottam faith and students of the guru Shastriji Maharaj, exposed him to the faith at an early age. Later, Maharaj would study under Shastriji Maharaj, who helped him along the way to becoming a swami. His extraordinary empathy was apparent from an early age, and many people sought his advice and judgment on various issues.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj: Early Life

From an early age, Pramukh Swami Maharaj demonstrated a strong religious devotion. Upon completing his coursework, he would typically dash to the Hanuman temple located in the village. He would listen intently to the teachings of a Hindu holy man named Haridas, along with a childhood friend. Whenever Shastriji Maharaj and his disciple swamis came to the village, Maharaj also spent time with them.

His guru, Shastriji Maharaj, wrote him a letter at the age of seventeen urging him to become one of the swamis. With the blessings and consent of his parents, he left home that day to join Shastriji Maharaj and his swamis. He was renamed Shanti Bhagat after receiving “parshad diksha,” or primary initiation, from Shastriji Maharaj at Ambli Vali Pol in November 1939. He was given the title “Narayanswarupdas Swami” (the servant of the form of God) in January of the subsequent year.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj: Career

He studied Hindu texts and Sanskrit, and after becoming an expert in philosophy and scripture, he was given the title “Shastri.” Because of his thorough comprehension of the B.A.P.S.’s wider activities and affairs, his guru Shastriji Maharaj named him the “kothari” (head) of the sizable B.A.P.S. temple in Sarangpur. At the age of just 28, Shastriji Maharaj named him the B.A.P.S.’s administrative “pramukh,” or president. He became well-known as Pramukh Swami after that.

B.A.P.S. expanded greatly while he was in charge. Across the world, the organization attracted hundreds of thousands of followers. He completed 27 global spiritual travels, visiting over fifty nations across five continents. Under his leadership, B.A.P.S. aimed to promote greater awareness and respect for Hindu customs by organizing major cultural events, such as the 1991 Cultural Festival of India in New Jersey. Supporters of B.A.P.S. all over the world expressed their deep regret for his passing on August 13, 2016.
