She found solace in composing poetry, which allowed her to escape the problems at home.
She developed quite a reputation in her neighbourhood as she grew up, eventually attracting the attention of the rapper and songwriter Big Pun. He took her under his wing after being impressed by her abilities during a freestyle session. Ma then collaborated with her new mentor on his album “Yeeeeeh Baby,” launching her career. She appeared on two tracks from this album, ‘You Was Wrong’ and ‘Ms. Martin.’
After the unfortunate demise of Big Pun, Ma was signed by Fat Joe’s imprint labels, Universal and SRC. Then, she became a member of the Terror Squad hip-hop group. The vocalist appeared on the group’s second and final album on July 27, 2004, which earned her a Grammy nomination. In 2007, she began working on a new album titled “PunisHer,” on which she collaborated with the female rap group 3Sum. However, in July 2007 she was arrested for allegedly shooting the rapper Makeda Barnes-Joseph, placing her career on hold while she served her sentence. Ma released the mixtapes “Blasremy,” “The BX Files,” and “Shesus Khryst” while she was incarcerated. Her career expanded exponentially after her 2014 release from prison.
