Samuthirakani Biography: Samuthirakani (born April 26, 1973) is an Indian actor and film director who primarily appears in Tamil films as well as some Telugu and Malayalam films. In Paarthale Paravasam, he served as a director’s aide for K. Balachander.[3] 2016’s Visaranai earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Early years

Samuthirakani was born in Seithur, Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu on April 26, 1973. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Rajapalayam Rajus College and a Bachelor of Arts in Law from Ambedkar Law College. However, he desired a career as an actor. People used to tell him that he lacked the physical appearance and talent necessary for an acting career.

Career

In 1997, he joined Sundar K. Vijayan’s team as an assistant director. K. Balachander then noticed him and hired him as assistant director for Balachander’s 100th film, Paarthale Paravasam. In addition, he assisted Balachander on the Jaya TV mega-serial Anni. Samuthirakani recalled that the work experience he acquired under Balachander was of great assistance to him while filming the Sun TV mega-serials Arasi and Selvi, which were massive hits with housewives.

Samuthirakani began his career as a director in the early 2000s. Before directing Unnai Charanadaindhen (2003) for S. P. B. Charan, he produced the abandoned film titled Uyir Nanbanukku, starring Cheran.

However, the triumph of the 2009 film Naadodigal established Samuthirakani as a director. He has since directed films including Poraali (2011), Nimirndhu Nil (2014), and Appa (2016). All of these films were remade in Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Two Telugu films were directed by him: Shambo Shiva Shambo (2010) and Janda Pai Kapiraju (2015).

Samuthirakani, who directed and starred in the original Appa (2016), co-directed the Malayalam adaptation Aakashamittee (2017) with M. Padmakumar. He also performed a significant role in the 2018 Rajinikanth film Kaala.

He acted in the 2020 Telugu film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. Samuthirakani has returned to directing with the film Naadodigal 2, which addresses the subject of equality. He played the lead character in the 2021 Telugu film Aakashavaani. Additionally, he directed and acted in the fantasy comedy Vinodhaya Sitham.
