Sukhdev Thapar Biography: Sukhdev Thapar (15 May 1907 – 23 March 1931) was an Indian revolutionary who fought for the independence of India against the British administration. His affiliation was with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). On March 23, 1931, he was executed alongside Shivaram Rajguru and Bhagat Singh.

Early years

On May 15, 1907, Sukhdev Thapar was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, British Raj to Ramlal Thapar and Ralli Devi. After his father’s demise, he was raised by his uncle Lala Achintram, who was a member of the Hindu Punjabi Khatri community. He displayed a defiant attitude from an early age. He refused to salute British officers who visited his school while he was in school.

Career

In 1925, Fakhruddin met Jawaharlal Nehru in England. He alone joined the ‘Indian National Congress and took part in the Indian Independence Campaign. He held numerous influential positions within the Congress Party. In 1935, he was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly. He occurred subsequently in 1936. The individual joined the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. In September 1938, he was appointed Minister of Finance, Revenue, and Labour for the state of Assam.

During the “Quit India Campaign” in 1942, he was apprehended and spent three and a half years in prison. Was convicted of. In 1961, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed joined the Delhi Golf Club and the Delhi Gymkhana Club. In 1967, he was also elected president of the All India Cricket Association. Indira Gandhi was the one who elected Ahmed president in 1974. On 20 August 1974, he became the second Muslim to be elected as the President of India. After a visit with Indira Gandhi the same day, he was renowned for announcing the birth of a child by signing papers at midnight. In 1975, after being proclaimed a baby boy in India, he exercised constitutional authority as the nation’s leader.

Death

The British executed Sukhdev Thapar, Bhagat Singh, and Rajguru on March 23, 1931, at Lahore Central Jail. To avoid public outrage, the British cremated the bodies of the three men in covert on the banks of the Sutlej River. The Tribune, a prominent newspaper in India, published the news of the execution on its front page shortly after the event.

Facts

  • In 1926, Bhagat Singh instituted the Naujawan Bharat Seva movement, which was supported by Sukhdev Thapar, and the two became fast friends. As a college student in Lahore, Sukhdev Thapar discovered books on revolutions from around the globe and was inspired by the Russian Revolution to join India’s independence movement.
  • Sukhdev Thapar used to deliver lectures on national patriotism at the National College in Lahore to inspire the youth of India to rebel against the British Empire. He used to explain India’s history and its patriots.
  • On 17 December 1927, Sukhdev Thapar, Bhagat Singh, and Rajguru murdered John P. Saunders, the Assistant Superintendent of Police, in Lahore and then fled to Lucknow by train. They returned to Lahore several days after the incident.
  • Immediately following their deaths, the news of the executions of Sukhdev Thapar, Bhagat Singh, and Rajguru spread like wildfire and was covered by numerous prominent media outlets around the world. The news was publicised by the New York Times because the execution occurred on the day that the Indian National Congress held its annual convention in Karachi.
  • Hussainiwala, where Sukhdev Thapar, Bhagat Singh, and Rajguru were cremated, was transformed by the government of India into the National Martyrs Memorial to honour their sacrifices during the Indian independence movement.
