He has known former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci since he was a young child. Together, they attended the same secondary school and participated in football, basketball, and track. In addition, they shared a residence hall at Northern Michigan University. From 1973 to 1997, he was a member of the university’s men’s basketball team, and he still retains the record for most career minutes played.

Following graduation, he was appointed for a one-year stint as the head football coach at Ishpeming High School. Then, he served as an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University from 1979 to 1983. In September of 1983, he then began volunteering as an assistant coach for Michigan State.

Tom Izzo was an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa for two months in 1986. In addition, Michigan State University promoted him to head coach of the men’s basketball team in 1995, after hiring him as an assistant coach just before 1990.
