Vir Das Biography: The Indian comedian, actor, and comedy musician Vir Das is currently embroiled in a great deal of controversy over his recent recital of the monologue ‘Two Indias’ at the Kennedy Centre in the United States. It is not the first time that his work and performances have earned him criticism and controversy. Nonetheless, he is one of the courageous comedians who stands by their words. Not only is Vir Das well-known for his stand-up comedy, but he is also a well-known actor who has appeared in numerous Hindi films, such as Delhi Belly, Badmaash Company, and Go Goa Gone. He was even featured in the 2017 Netflix special Abroad Understanding.

Youth and Early Life

Vir Das was born in Dehradun, Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand), on 31 May 1979. He was reared primarily in Africa and attended schools in Lagos, Nigeria, Delhi, and Shimla, among others.

Das moved to the United States for his higher education and received a degree in economics and theatre from Knox College in Illinois. He is also a member of the Delta Theta chapter of Sigma Nu at Knox. He later studied at the Moscow Arts Theatre as well.

Vir Das Career

Vir Das began performing stand-up comedy while still a student at Knox. His one-hour special, ‘Brown Men Can’t Hump,’ which premiered at Knox’s Harbach Theatre, received a great deal of praise. He was awarded both the Richter Theatre Scholarship and the Colton Performance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting. Later, he served as a teaching assistant at Knox before attending Harvard to study method acting.

Following his return to India, he performed more than one hundred comedy performances in key cities. He immediately launched a career in television. He hosted the programmes ‘Is Route Ki Sabhin Linein Maast Hain’ and ‘Ek Rahin Vir’ on the Zoom TV channel. Other programmes he has hosted include ‘Star World’s ‘Top Drive- Get Away’ and ‘Cricket Firsts’. He also hosted the CNBC-TV18 news comedy programme “News on the Loose.”

In the 2007 Bollywood drama ‘Namastey London’ starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, he made his film début in a supporting role. The film was a commercial success. In the same year, he starred in another film titled ‘Mumbai Salsa’. He subsequently appeared in several episodes of the television series ‘Mumbai Calling’.

In 2009, he performed a supporting character in the romantic film ‘Love Aaj Kal’. The film was directed by Imtiaz Ali and starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. The film was about the sensation of unadulterated, eternal love. It was a commercial smash hit. The following year, he appeared in ‘Badmaash Company’ which was directed by Parmeet Sethi. The film was a financial success but received conflicting reviews.

In 2011, he starred in the black comedy film “Delhi Belly.” The film, directed by Abhinay Deo, was a great commercial triumph and was also praised by critics. The film received three Filmfare Awards, including one for “Best Screenplay.” Next

Major Works

The Indian black comedy film ‘Delhi Belly’ featured Vir Das in a leading role. Abhinay Deo directed the film, which also featured Imran Khan, Kunal Roy Kapoor, and Poorna Jagannathan. The film was a tremendous financial triumph, generating approximately Rs. 100 crores on a budget of Rs. 25 crores. The film centred on three companions whose lives are abruptly turned upside down. Das portrayed one of the leading characters in the 2013 zombie comedy film ‘Go Goa Gone’. The film was directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK and featured Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, and Anand Tiwari. The plot centred on three companions who were stranded on a zombie-infested island. Khan portrays Boris, a Russian Zombie exterminator who saves them in the end. The movie was a commercial triumph, grossing over Rs. 38 crores on a budget of Rs.

In the 2016 action-thriller Shivaay, he appeared in a supporting role. Ajay Devgn directed and produced the film, and he also portrayed the main role. Sayyeshaa Saigal, Abigail Eames, and Erika Kaar were also featured. The plot of the movie centred on an Indian mountaineer whose daughter is abducted by traffickers. It was a commercial success, but critics gave it conflicting reviews. It was also released in numerous other nations, including the United States, Australia, and Canada.

Vir Das Awards & Achievements

Since 2014, Vir Das has been married to Shivani Mathur.
