The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) annually administers a Personality Test (interview) to those who have passed the Civil Services Main Exam (written).
Typically, this interview occurs during the months of February, March, and April.

Aspiring Civil Service candidates’ ultimate rank is determined by their performance on both the Main Exam and the Personality Test (interview).

During the interview process, each candidate confronts a panel of five members, with one member of the UPSC serving as Chairman. Typically, 6-7 of these panels conduct interviews for multiple candidates simultaneously. Each candidate is interviewed for approximately 30 minutes on average. Six candidates are typically interviewed during the morning session and six candidates are interviewed during the evening session.

During the interview, boards examine the candidates’ professional histories and ask them about topics of general interest. The primary purpose of this interview is to assess their mental and personal qualifications for a career in public service. In addition to assessing their intellect, it also considers their social awareness and interest in current events.

UPSC Personality Test: What all does this interview assess?

Here are some of the most important cognitive characteristics that are evaluated during an interview with a potential UPSC candidate.

Presence of mind

This is essential for candidates for the civil service. The key to success is concentration. If necessary, seek clarification and avoid ambiguous responses. However, repeatedly requesting clarification can indicate a lack of mental acuity, so balance is essential when demonstrating your comprehension of queries. Answers must address all aspects of the question, whether they be social, political, or economic. Respond specifically to multiple or follow-up queries.

Analytical ability

The USPS values the ability to critically analyse evidence. Candidates must have the capacity to differentiate between facts and opinions. During interviews, opinions on contemporary issues are elicited. Candidates should present the perspectives of all stakeholders and demonstrate an appreciation for multiple points of view. After a thorough evaluation, they can offer their own opinions, demonstrating their problem-solving abilities. This approach exemplifies objectivity and analytic reasoning, which are essential for passing the personality test.

A balanced viewpoint

In UPSC interviews, candidates should endeavour for a balanced perspective and avoid extreme positions. Extremes might not be welcomed. Finding a middle ground that reflects balanced judgement is advisable. Crucial are impartial judgement and a balanced perspective on events or topics. Candidates should avoid bias and demonstrate the ability to evaluate issues by considering their various dimensions, demonstrating their impartiality.

Clarity of expression

A civil servant must always use lucid, logical expression. Clarity of thought and expression is regarded as an essential skill. Candidates should support their opinions with cogent arguments, rather than parroting those of others. Thoughtful reflection, analysis, and introspection aid in the formation of unique opinions. This strategy guarantees clarity of vision and logical continuity in responses, thereby increasing the likelihood of a favourable evaluation.

Diverse and extensive passions

UPSC values applicants with interests outside of academics. At the interview stage, extracurricular activities and interests are crucial evaluation factors. Frequently, questions delve into these topics to assess knowledge profundity and diverse interests. Candidates should conduct extensive investigation on their hobbies to gain a deeper understanding. The UPSC requires its civil servants to have a genuine interest in matters of public concern, which enables them to address a variety of public issues.

Administration and social cohesion

The United States Public Service Commission values candidates who demonstrate leadership qualities and recognise the significance of social cohesion in public service. It is essential to demonstrate the ability to guide human resources and achieve results. Candidates must also have a cheerful personality and be adept at resolving conflicts. They should be objective communicators and objective observers of the sociopolitical environment. Familiarity with various facets of situations and the ability to devise practical solutions are crucial. It is recommended to maintain decorum during stressful interviews, as a positive attitude can positively influence the evaluation.

Integrity moral and intellectual

The United States Public Service Commission prioritises morally upright candidates in an effort to earn the trust of average citizens. To evaluate this quality, moral dilemmas may be posed. Therefore, it is crucial to be truthful during the interview. Moreover, intellectual honesty, adherence to rational thought, and adherence to consistent standards are also essential. These qualities are evaluated by the interview panel. Understanding the focus of the interview is essential for functioning well in UPSC interviews.
