The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 established state boundaries in India based on language. The Bombay State was established as a result of this act. The Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti was at the forefront of the movement to divide the Bombay State into two states. One was composed of regions where Gujarati and Kutchi were the predominant languages and the other of regions where Marathi and Konkani were the predominant languages.
