The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 established state boundaries in India based on language. The Bombay State was established as a result of this act. However, was comprised of distinct regions where distinct languages were spoken, including Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, and Konkani. The Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti was at the forefront of the movement to divide the Bombay State into two states. One was composed of regions where Gujarati and Kutchi were the predominant languages and the other of regions where Marathi and Konkani were the predominant languages.
According to the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960, passed by the Indian Parliament on 25 April 1960. The states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed as a consequence of this movement. The act went into effect on May 1, 1960, thus the annual celebration.
