The Red Fort is the center of Delhi and houses many museums.

Red Fort Significance: The Red Fort complex comes alive every August 15, when the Prime Minister hoists the national flag and addresses the nation from its ramparts on Independence Day.

The Red Fort is located in Delhi, India. It has a great history as it was the main residence of the Mughal emperors for almost 200 years (until 1857).

The Red Fort is the center of Delhi and houses many museums. It was not only the residence of the emperors, but also the center of Mughal state politics and events that critically affected the region. Its construction was started by the 5th Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1639 as the site of his fortress capital of Shahjahanabad. The Red Fort derives its name from its massive red sandstone walls. It is connected by a water channel known as Paradise Stream.

History

It is one of the oldest and most famous monuments of Old Delhi, locally known as Lal Quila. It faces the city on one side and its wall is about 33 meters high and 18 meters high on the river bank facing the Yamuna. The building was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Historically, it marked an important era, transition and concentration of power in Delhi. It was built in 1648 by Shahjahan. Construction actually began in 1638-39 when Mughal ruler Shahjahan decided to move his capital from Agra to Delhi. It was originally known as Qila-I-Mubarak or the Blessed Fort when it was the residence of Shahjahan and his royal family. Since India’s independence from the British Raj in 1947, Independence Day celebrations have been held at the Red Fort every year on August 15. The Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag over the Red Fort Lahore Gate and addresses the nation.
