Jadavpur University ragging death cause of major concern: The death of a freshman at Kolkata’s prestigious Jadavpur University (JU) on August 10, allegedly due to ragging, is not only tragic but also a significant cause for concern, said Dharmendra Pradhan, minister of education, skill development, and entrepreneurship.

“I had an in-depth conversation with the University Grants Commission about the issue. We must determine whether or not Jadavpur University has implemented the UGC’s anti-ragging guidelines. I am also in regular contact with party officials in West Bengal, Pradhan told reporters this afternoon.

The Union education minister stated that no senior student has the right to injure a freshman in the name of ragging, and that the death of the JU freshman is a great shock to his family.

“Students have no right to engage in hazing,” said Pradhan.

Only on Saturday did the JU administration send the UGC its second round of clarifications regarding the alleged hazing-related death of a freshman at the university on August 10.

Earlier in the week, the JU administration sent its first round of clarifications to UGC regarding measures taken by the university to prevent ragging and harassment of freshmen and first-year students on campus and in student hostels.

Nonetheless, dissatisfied with this first-round clarification on August 17, the commission requested additional clarifications on 12 specific points, to which the JU authorities responded on Saturday. According to the registrar of the university, Snehomoju Basu, clarifications on 12 distinct queries from the UGC had been sent via 31 files.
