History of National Bartender Day

Bartending as a profession has existed since the early days of civilization. Ancient Egyptian tombs have been found with reliefs depicting people making and serving drinks. In ancient Greece, there was a god of wine named Dionysus, and his priests were known as bakkkhai, which is thought to be the origin of the word “bartender”.

The first documented use of the word “bartender” in English was in 1736, when a London newspaper reported on a fight between two bartenders. By the early 1800s, bartending had become a respected profession in America. The first American bartending manual was published in 1869 by Jerry Thomas, one of the most famous bartenders of his time.

Bartending gained popularity during Prohibition in the 1920s, when many bars and nightclubs opened illegally to serve alcohol. Bartenders became skilled at making drinks that disguised the taste of bootleg liquor. After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, bartending continued to grow in popularity, and by the mid-20th century it had become a mainstay of American culture.
