America Recycles Day 2023: History

The Day was not a national holiday in the past. Two employees of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality initiated the practice in Texas by designating it as Texas Recycles Day. This day was intended to encourage more individuals to recycle their refuse and disseminate information about recycling throughout the state.

Kevin Teurff and Valerie Davis, both of whom were employed by the Texas Commission, consistently observed Texas Recycles Day. They advocated for the renaming of Texas Recycles Day to America Recycles Day upon leaving their positions. With the acceptance of the proposal by the National Recycling Coalition, America Recycles Day was established.

In Florida, the inaugural America Recycles Day was declared, and more than forty states took part. The National Recycling Coalition has endeavored to expand the events’ reach across the nation over the years. Currently, more than 3,000 events are taking place in all fifty states.

Since the day events and the efforts of the Recycling Coalition, recycling has increased from 7% in the 1960s to 32% today.

Keep America Beautiful, the largest community organization in the country, endeavors to enhance the aesthetic appeal of American communities by promoting recycling and reducing pollution. This organization is among the principal coordinators of events.

Recycling events are organized and promoted by them throughout the entire month of November. They mobilize volunteers to conduct community cleanups and gather recyclable materials as an integral component of their initiative to mitigate pollution.

Furthermore, they employ social media campaigns to persuade individuals to recycle more, thereby contributing to an increase in recycling rates across the nation.
