Armistice Day (Saint Barthelemy) 2023: History

On November 10, 1919, at Buckingham Palace, King George V hosted a “Banquet in Honor of the President of the French Republic” as the initial observance of Armistice Day. The first Armistice Day festivities took place on the palace grounds the following morning. A period of two minutes of silence was observed in remembrance of the war casualties.

Other nations observed comparable ceremonies in the aftermath of World War I. In the late 1920s, the Memorable Order of Tin Hats established a ceremony in South Africa that included a solemn toast to “Fallen Comrades” and only used the “Light of Remembrance.” In conclusion, the ritual features the anthem of the Order, “Old Soldiers Never Die.” At 11 a.m., a period of two minutes of silence is observed in the United Kingdom, and at war memorials throughout the nation, poppy bouquets are frequently set. To prevent the two-minute silence from interfering with wartime productions if November 11 fell on a weekday, it was relocated to the Sunday closest to that date in Britain in 1939.

After the conclusion of World War II, the majority of Commonwealth states adopted Remembrance Day, following Canada’s example. Other countries, including the United States, renamed Veterans Day in honor of military veterans from every conflict. A number of these observances feature cannon salutes or trumpet pieces referred to as “The Last Post.”
