Every year, the Aztec New Year occurs on March 12 in Mexico. It marks the beginning of the New Year on the Aztec calendar. We frequently envision time as a linear concept, a direct line from A to B. The Aztecs held an entirely distinct viewpoint. Time exerted a force. It offered vitality and change. Time was frequently a portent of miracles. The Aztecs saw the world through the lens of perpetual creation, devastation, and rebirth. Given the ebb and flow of life, we believe they were accurate. The Aztec New Year commemorates an ancient culture whose concepts are still relevant today.

The background of Aztec New Year

The Aztec New Year occurs annually on March 12 and marks the beginning of the year according to the Aztec Calendar. This date is rich in symbolism, traditions, and festivities.
The holiday is significant to Nahua communities in Mexico, which include indigenous peoples from Mexico and El Salvador. The original Nahuatl name for the holiday is ‘Yancuic Xihuitl’ The fascinating Nahuatl language has numerous dialects and Uto-Aztecan foundations. Today, Nahua communities speak a combination of Nahuatl and Spanish.

From 1300 to 1521, the Aztecs ascended to prominence as the cultural centre of Mesoamerica. They adhered to the Mexica or Aztec calendar, a 365-day cycle with two portions that ran concurrently. The first was the xiuhpohualli or year tally. Tonalpohualli, or ‘counting of the days,’ was the second 260-day ritual cycle.

Today’s celebrations of Yancuic Xihuitl typically occur the night before, on March 11. The celebrations are, as expected, magnificent. On this day, cities such as Nuapan, Huauchinango, Xicotepec, Zongolica, and Mexico City host numerous events.

The festivities begin with ceremonial dances and music accompanied by traditional drumming. The dancers are attired in vibrant traditional garb and quetzal feather headdress. Those fortunate enough to attend can attest to the mesmerising nature of these performances. People present seeds as offerings and burn ‘ocote’ or pitch-pine candles, which produce an aromatic and highly combustible resin.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, participants burn a flag representing the previous year and scent a replacement flag. In conclusion, they usher in the New Year by exhaling into conch shells, just as their ancestors did centuries ago.
